Mauves and blues in the background will
guarantee distance. Observe the combination of violets and blues.
It's a good practice to separate and distinguish the color of trees from the surrounding grass.having  green trees with yellow ocher grass will help separate these elements.
Example of bare winter trees. Observe the thin twigs how light they get in value.
This is an example of what not to do. The two trees in the center follow the same pattern and there is no change in color. The painting on the left is specially  monotonous in color.
Interesting painting of evergreen trees with snow hanging on the trees. Make sure when you do this one side of the trees will be in the shadow. Observe how the artist depicts the snow under the branches.
On the other hand this is a good example of variegation of greens.
Observe the simplicity of the brush strokes. How easy it is to depict far away trees this way?


One way to visualize how to paint trees in oils is to imagine it is made of putty clay. You take a hair dryer and start to melt the rough edges. The result of this is how your trees should look.
All the trunks are varied in position and width. The ones in the water make great pointers.
